Costa Romantica Cancels Cruise After Fire
Published on: March 2, 2009
Costa Cruises’ Costa Romantica canceled its Feb. 26 South America departure due to damage from an engine room fire on Feb. 25. The fire, located in one of four diesel generators in the engine room on Deck 1, caused a general black-out on the ship, although emergency generators were switched on immediately. The fire occurred as the ship was at sea off the coast of Uruguay. The fire was extinguished and the “safety of our passengers and crew never in danger,” a company spokeswoman said. The ship was able to get propulsion to sail to Punta del Este, where guests were disembarked. The line provided transportation to Buenos Aires, where the cruise was scheduled to conclude. Costa refunded guests two days of the cruise paid and also gave them a 20 percent credit on a future Costa cruise.
The next cruise was scheduled to depart Bueno Aires on Feb. 26, but was cancelled because the ship is undergoing repairs in Montevideo. Costa said it is “providing full assistance to guests” who arrived for the Feb. 26 cruise with hotel accommodations and other related expenses. The line was exploring providing an alternative resort or tour vacation option through March 12. Those who don’t want an alternative vacation will receive a refund, assistance to return home and a 50 percent cruise-only credit that can be used on another Costa cruise by Dec. 31, 2010.
