Atlantic Canada Unveils Summer Specials
Published on: April 7, 2009

This year New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island are featuring new travel experiences. Prince Edward Island (PEI) offers visitors the chance to “Live Like an Islander,” learning to tong oysters, make legal moonshine, be a lobsterman or try harness racing. Experience PEI features some 25 different island experiences like “Driver for a Day” ($69 per person) where visitors can get a sense of the island’s harness racing history. Aspiring drivers will be taught the basics of horse care, how to harness and later, will be handed the reins. In “Tong and Shuck,” seafood lovers can go out on an oyster dory to gather oysters ($28 per person.) In “Back Roads Folk Art,” participants will create their own whimsical works under the guidance of master carver Kerras Jeffrey and get a PEI history lesson in the bargain (from $46 per person). For more information, call 866-887-3238 or visit www.experiencepei.com.
Fredericton is offering visitors the chance to channel their inner Picassos at 120 edVentures workshops in the arts, crafts and design. Participants can choose from classes of painting, photography, fiction writing, jewelry-making, pottery and traditional Atlantic Canadian crafts like rug hooking and quilting -- all with experienced instructors. Named Canada’s culture capital, this riverfront city in New Brunswick is a natural choice since it is home to the renowned New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. And with the Maritime Writers Workshop, the 3,000-work Beaverbrook Art Gallery and the University of New Brunswick Arts Centre, the city is alive with creative talent. One-day workshops including “Introduction to Watercolor,” the “Pinhole Photography and Basic Cameras” and the “Beginner Basketry” are all $56, plus materials. The five-day “Intermediate Raku Pottery” workshop is $319, plus materials. Book before June 1 and receive a 15 percent discount. For more information, call 888-850-1333 or visit www.edventures.ca.
Travelers to Halifax who reserve Heritage Explorers’ “Night Watch” get to board the 1913 CSS Acadia, one of the world’s best preserved Edwardian steamships and spend a night in the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. With more than 240,000 artifacts dating as far back as the 1850s, the museum’s extensive collection includes 20,000 photographs, 300 ship portraits, a shipwreck database with 5,000 records along with intricate ship models, a 19th century sloop and other small craft. The exhibition, “Titanic: The Unsinkable Ship and Halifax,” traces the city’s role in the aftermath of the tragic 1912 disaster. From parrots and pirates to shipwrecks and ghosts, participants will hear hair-raising stories and learn about Nova Scotia’s rich marine heritage. The $36 per person cost includes an evening snack and light breakfast. For more information, call 902-446-4551 or visit www.heritageexplorers.com.
