Tourism Cares Awards $40,000 in ASTA scholarships
Published on: September 16, 2009
Tourism Cares, a tourism industry organization for preservation, conservation, restoration and education, awarded nearly $40,000 in scholarships to 20 travel, tourism and hospitality students as part of the ASTA scholarship program. The recipients’ schools represent educational institutions across the United States. In addition to monetary awards ranging from $750 to $4,000, the academic scholarship recipients are also invited to attend the Tourism Cares Experience the Industry Student Program at the National Tour Association Annual Convention in Reno, Nev., in November. The program gives students the opportunity to shadow professional mentors and participate in convention workshops.
The Tourism Cares ASTA Scholarship Review Committee, comprised of travel, tourism and hospitality educators from across the county, selects the academic scholarship recipients each year from hundreds of applicants. This year, the application process was online through the STARS online application platform accessed through the Tourism Cares website www.tourismcares.org This year’s recipients include nine Bachelors, three Associates, four Masters, two Doctorates, and two non-traditional students. The scholarship funds are used to cover expenses for tuition, books, educational fees, and research only. In addition to offering the ASTA Scholarships, Tourism Cares also offers the National Tour Association Scholarships. The awards vary annually and those interested are encouraged to check the Tourism Cares website for details in early 2010 for upcoming offerings. Tourism Cares is a nonprofit public charity that preserves the travel experience for future generations by giving grants to natural, cultural and historic sites worldwide; presenting academic and professional development scholarships to students of travel, tourism, and hospitality; and by organizing volunteer restoration events at tourism-related sites in need of care and rejuvenation.
