BA Cabin Crew Votes Again to Strike, No Date Set
Published on: February 23, 2010
British Airways cabin crew have voted for a strike action in the ongoing dispute between the airline and the crew members over changes to crew numbers and working practices, according to the workers’ union, Unite. Just over 80 percent of all those who returned their ballot forms voted yes to industrial action on a 78.7 percent turnout, according to a press release issued by Unite. It said that 7,482 of crew members balloted voted yes and 1,789 voting no, with 11,691 ballot papers issued. However, the union has not announced dates for industrial action.
The union said that cabin crew are concerned that reduced crew numbers proposed by BA will impact on service standards, and are also worried that BA's refusal to consult on these changes means that the company has broken with the long-standing negotiating structures, which have delivered significant flexibility to the company including changes needed following 9/11 and the SARS outbreak. The vote was the second on a strike; the first vote was declared invalid by a High Court judge because it included workers who had already agreed to leave the London-based company. And last week, BA won another court case when the union failed in its efforts to have the staffing changes declared illegal. For more information, visit www.ba.com or www.unitetheunion.com.
