Baja California Sur is a destination of contrasts. Its beautiful combination of desert, mountain and sea is its greatest gift to visitors, who go there to be a part of nature through excursions that bring them close to it all.

The towns that are a part of Baja California Sur offer even more contrasts. There travelers will find major tourism destinations, home to some of the world’s most beautiful resorts, spas and golf courses, as well as towns that provide a taste of authentic Mexico. There’s even a ghost town to explore, and the start of a mission trail. Active types will enjoy incredible sportfishing and diving, as well as surfing, kayaking, mountain biking and hiking.

History
The 1,000-mile-long Baja Peninsula sits west of mainland Mexico, just below Southern California. Until the 1970s, very few visitors went to this part of the country due to a lack of transportation options and a tourism structure that had only a few fishing lodges and budget motels. The opening of the transpeninsular highway in 1973 and Baja California Sur’s statehood a year later brought the change needed to open the destination to the world.

Today, direct air service to Los Cabos and La Paz connects the destination to the world, and the 1,044-mile, two-lane highway makes it easy to explore the region. Development has created several first-class marinas, world-class resorts, golf courses designed by the sport’s top players, fine restaurants and luxury shopping malls. Museums have been built, and colonial-era buildings have been restored to preserve the past.
