A&K Adds Antarctica Departure with Photographer Harker
Abercrombie & Kent added a new departure to Antarctica in November featuring a photo enrichment program conducted by professional photographer and photo coach Richard Harker. “The very elements that make Antarctica a dream destination for photographers -- pristine snow and ice contrasting with the sea and sky, the abundant wildlife and seabirds in constant motion -- make it a challenge,” said Harker.
Harker said to help guests return with the images of a lifetime, he shares practical tips on how to capture the beauty of the remarkable scenery, as well as the extraordinary wildlife. Daily photography workshops on board cover equipment, angles and composition, mood and location, exposure and lighting, and focus on techniques to help photographers get the most from their cameras.
Abercrombie & Kent’s Classic Antarctica (Nov. 27-Dec 10) is a two-week voyage during the ideal time of year to capture the changing weather conditions of early Austral Summer. Photographers can expect dramatic sunrises and sunsets, pristine snow and signs of the ice pack beginning to break up. For those who want to observe and photograph wildlife at close range, this is the most active time of year in penguin rookeries, with nest building in full swing and early chicks hatching.
Top geologists, ornithologists, historians, wildlife photographers and marine biologists give enriching lectures and provide hands-on guidance both on board and on shore, ranging from the practical (how to master your digital camera) to the personal (a first-hand account of overwintering on a remote sub-Antarctic island). Zodiac drivers are certified field naturalists who provide knowledgeable commentary on the twice-daily excursions that take guests into the heart of this once-in-a-lifetime destination.
For an in-depth introduction to Antarctica and the A&K experience aboard Le Boreal, Harker will conduct a complimentary webinar Feb. 29 at 12 p.m. CT for travel agents and their clients.
