Aqua Expeditions, a company that was started just four years ago by Francesco Galli Zugaro, its founder and CEO, currently has two river vessels plying the Amazon in Peru -- the 24-pasenger Aqua and the 32-passenger Aria. But Zugaro claims the reception to his product has been so good that he’s now planning to add another ship in a completely different region of the world.
Speaking at Virtuoso Travel Week, Zugaro said his company in January 2014 plans to launch a new 40-passenger river vessel on the Mekong, offering seven-day sailings through Cambodia and Vietnam. He said one of the chief attractions for selecting the Mekong was the chance to combine river cruising with visits to Angkor Watt, which he said was similar to how his company combines visits to Machu Picchu with Amazon sailings.
The new river ship, which is being designed by Saigon-based Noor, will feature a modern contemporary design with an Asian style, 20 suites, 300-square-foot cabins and culinary creations from a local celebrity chef. There will also be a spa and fitness center, dining room, library, screening room and observation deck with pool and lounge bar. It will sail an itinerary that includes Siem Riep to Phnom Penh to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City).
