Kristin Karst, executive vice president and co-owner at AmaWaterways, is focused on adding new itineraries, strategic partnerships and strengthening her river cruise line’s fleet to help travel agents sell the brand. I sat down with Kristin to find out what AmaWaterways offers, including theme cruises, itineraries and more.

Michelle Fee: Besides wine, what other theme cruises do you offer?

Kristin Karst: AmaWaterways currently offers a variety of themed cruises, including our first-ever beer themed sailings, as well as art-centric itineraries and a Jewish Heritage cruise. We also are thrilled to have more than doubled our wine-themed sailings for 2016, with the addition of Bordeaux as a brand new destination.

Fee: We all know the most popular river cruises are on the Danube and Rhine. What other rivers do you sail on?

Karst: In addition to our Danube and Rhine river cruises, AmaWaterways offers sailings on the Seine, Rhône, Main, Mosel and Douro, as well as Dutch and Belgian waterways in Europe. We also offer exotic itineraries in Asia on the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia and Irrawaddy River in Myanmar, and on the Chobe River in Africa.

Fee: What is your favorite exotic itinerary?

Karst: Personally, I am very passionate about our “Vietnam, Cambodia and the Riches of the Mekong” itinerary. This area of the world continues to grow in popularity amongst our guests, especially for those who already know and love our European product. Thanks to this growing demand, we are excited to welcome our brand new ship, AmaDara, on the Mekong this August.

Fee: What can you us about your new partnership with Adventures by Disney to provide family river cruises?

Karst: AmaWaterways has recently partnered with Adventures by Disney to offer the magic of river cruising to younger travelers and the family market. The collaboration provides an exciting new way for families to experience the heart of Europe, with activities for all ages and the combination of AmaWaterways’ exceptional VIP service and Disney’s rich storytelling. We are excited to help open the eyes of a younger audience to the beauty of Europe’s rivers.

Fee: Is there Internet on board a river cruise vessel?

Karst: Yes, all of our European fleet offers onboard wireless Internet for our guests’ convenience. Our ships’ in-room entertainment, on-demand system also provides added comfort with the latest in Hollywood movies, a music library and English- language television stations.

Fee: Can you expand on AmaWaterways’ all-inclusive cruise offerings?

Karst: At AmaWaterways, our all-inclusive itineraries are complete with onboard luxury accommodations, an exquisite variety of fine-dining options at all meals and more. While additional beverage services between meals are not included, guests can enjoy complimentary house wine, local beer and soft drinks with every lunch and dinner. Specialty coffees, teas and our Detox Water also are available through the entire day and evening.

Our itineraries also include daily life-enriching tours and excursions, onboard lectures and music performances, as well complimentary bicycles that guests can use in port. This includes our Limited Edition Tours and our latest hiking itineraries, which invite guests to take an active approach to cruising and cater to a variety of interests and activity levels.

Our guests can also enjoy some additional surprises along the way, such as traditional Frühschoppen in Bavaria or a daily choice of tapas and other treats especially tailored to each destination.

Fee: Do you have any plans to build a ship for a U.S. river?

Karst: While expansion into homeports in the U.S. is a growing trend, Europe remains our core product and primary area of emphasis at AmaWaterways. We will continue to offer more options for our guests to explore undiscovered areas in Europe. We also look forward to expanding our offerings in Asia as this wonderful, exotic destination grows in popularity.
