The Millennial Factor
One of the most talked-about subjects in the travel industry these days is millennials – a subject that some of us are growing tired of hearing about. Nonetheless, that topic is perpetually discussed for very good reasons. For starters, this segment of the population will represent the largest sector of the workforce in the U.S. and perhaps what will turn out to be the wealthiest population group in our nation’s history.
Millennials are also key to the future of the luxury travel agency business, which is one of the reasons why SmartFlyer is “millennial heavy.” My insurance broker once told me your biggest pool of clients will be within five years of your age. Who else, then, would be more adept at reeling in that millennial Internet executive into the SmartFlyer fold than a 30-ish travel advisor?
Additionally, millennials are quick learners and technologically savvy. And, if provided with the right tools and work environment, they can quickly exceed production figures. I have witnessed our young SmartFlyer agents close six-figure bookings on the street by slicing and dicing proposals on their smartphones.
Millennials are also researchers. They like options – and they like to provide their clients with options. At SmartFlyer, they have all the tools at their fingertips due to our relationships with Virtuoso and exclusive luxury hotel programs that we are able to capitalize on.
Who better than millennials to hop on a Red Eye and set up shop on the edge of a swimming pool at a luxury hotel with their laptops as they post on Instagram?
On a personally self-serving note, another value of the millennial SmartFlyer staff is that they can synch my Apple Watch with my iPhone quicker than I can!
If you are a millennial who’s planning to make the leap into the luxury travel agency business – it may very well be the right choice for you!
THE RIGHT MIX
Luxury travel agencies are best served with a mix of staff , including millennials and more veteran agents who are able to mentor younger consultants in navigating the intricacies of the travel business.
SmartFlyer is fortunate to have some wonderful, seasoned agents around the country who are able to share their expertise with up-andcoming millennials.
I myself am just turning 50. Sometimes these young travel advisors come to me with client anecdotes that they think I simply won’t believe. I say, “Tell me.” I listen, and nod my head, and say, “Yup, I’ve heard that before.”
