Hotwire Releases June 2012 Hotel Travel Savings Indicator

July 01, 2012 9:49 PM

Hotwire.com, a leading discount travel site, released the June 2012 Hotwire Travel Savings Indicator, which features the top five cities in North America where hotel, air and car rental rates have dropped the most as compared to the same time last year. The report helps guide travelers to the best destinations for maximizing their travel dollars each month.

For the first time in three months, Atlantic City didn't make the top five ranking. Sliding in to the number one spot is Princeton, N.J., with a 6 percent price drop. Meanwhile, Augusta, Ga., remains in second place this month with a 5 percent price decrease as compared to last year.

Continuing to round out the top five hotel deal markets are Providence, R.I., and Spokane, Wash., each with 5 percent price drops. Providence offers an array of arts and entertainment for travelers to enjoy. As of late, 3.5-star hotels in this city have been increasing their discounts to compete for the same business as the four-star hotels that dominated the market last year. Conversely, in Spokane, there is less demand than last summer, so hotels are becoming more aggressive with rates.

Rounding out the top five is Montreal, where hotel rates have dropped 3 percent this month. While there, folks can catch L'International des Feux Loto-Quebec (International Fireworks Competition) that takes place from late June to early July.

When compared to this time last year, the top five hotel price reductions for June 2012 include: Princeton, N.J., down 6 percent to average four-star hotel rate of $87; Augusta, Ga., down 5 percent for an average three-star hotel rate of $59; Providence/Newport, R.I., down 5 percent for an average 3.5-star hotel rate of $96; Spokane, Wash. Down 5 percent for an average three-star hotel rate of $72; and Montreal, Quebec, down 2 percent for an average 3.5-star hotel rate of $82.

For the second month in a row, Little Rock, Ark., tops the list of places with the biggest airfare decreases, with a 20 percent drop.  In addition, Palm Springs, Calif., returns to the rankings with a 15 decrease. Vancouver, British Columbia offers some amazing deals just in time for the annual Vancouver International Jazz Festival as airfare rates are down by 9 percent. Finally, Key West, Fla., and Oakland, Calif., round out the top five airfare decreases with 7 and 5 percent drops, respectively.

This month, travelers can expect major discounts on car rentals with available rates as low as $19, signifying that this could be a great time for a last-minute summer road trip. Those looking to rent a car in Boston will see deep discounts as the city remains at the top of the discount car list for the third consecutive month with a 66 percent decrease. Following closely on Boston's heels, Las Vegas moves up the rankings to second place with a 57 percent price drop. Newcomers Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Seattle, Washington and Oakland, California also round out the bottom three, with 55, 51 and 47 percent decreases respectively.
