Airfare can easily be the most expensive aspect of your summer getaway, depending on your destination.
Fortunately there are several ways to take advantage of frequent flier promotions and cut down your costs that require only minimal effort.
Here are a trio of easy ways you can save on air travel this summer.
Pick a Destination and Earn Mileage Discounts
Big changes are coming to American Airlines' AAdvantage program Aug. 1. But in the meantime Citi credit card holders flying American can save on select flights this summer. The list of eligible airports changes throughout the year but members can earn up to 7,500 miles off of roundtrip flights.
The only downside is that travelers must make their reservations by phone.
Refer Friends to Air Berlin
For frequent travelers within Europe, Germany's second-largest airline Air Berlin has rolled out a promotion that could earn you up to 10,000 miles quick.
First, sign up to join Air Berlin's Top Bonus program to earn 500 miles. Afterward, refer friends to do the same to earn up to 9,500 additional miles. Members will earn 500 miles for the first friend they refer and then 1,000 miles for each friend after that up to nine times.
If your friends sign up they'll also earn 1,000 miles that they can put toward their travel.
For perspective, 10,000 miles is enough to cover the cost of a one-way ticket on an Air Berlin flight within Europe.
The deadline to sign up for the promotion and refer your friends is July 31.
Earn Discounts Toward Buying, Sharing Miles
If you find yourself in a position where you need to purchase miles, you'll be able to save up to 10 percent through American's AAdvantage program this July.
What's more, fliers will be able to earn up to a 30 percent discount when sharing miles through American.
