Qatar Airways Launches Third Australia Flight
Emirates isn’t the only Gulf carrier expanding its services to ANZ. Qatar Airways started flying to Sydney on March 1. The Doha-based airline already flies to Melbourne and Perth. Both Emirates and Etihad offer multiple daily services between their Middle Eastern hubs and Sydney.

Local Employers Fight Gatwick’s Second Runway Proposal
Gatwick is waiting to hear if it or neighboring Heathrow will get funding for expansion projects. Local employers near the airport have come out against Gatwick’s bid. Some business owners contend that an expansion would drive up wage expectations and force them into risky expansions. Other local businesses have more immediate concerns: if a second runway is built, they will have to relocate.

China Pushing Ahead with New Airport Projects
During the annual congressional meetings in Beijing, transport minister Yang Chuantang reaffirmed his country’s ambitious plan to start building 50 new airports over the next five years. Most of these new hubs will be located in the underserved and poor western and central regions of the country.

Major Changes Ahead for Ontario Airport
Planners are hoping for big things at LA Ontario International Airport. The Ontario International Airport Authority is seeking more direct flights, more airlines, lower fares and a new international terminal. They are selling the idea as a major economic catalyst for the entire Inland Empire region.

After a new $17 million upgrade to security checkpoints at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, wait times during peak hours still top 40 minutes. The reason is that the TSA has not provided enough screeners to staff the newly made checkpoints.

Hong Kong International Airport saw a huge increase in passenger numbers in January. It’s year-on-year total for number of fliers during the month was up 13.3 percent.

Alaska Airlines will actually adjust its flight path and departure time for an Anchorage-Honolulu flight so that passengers can get a good view of a rare solar eclipse during the journey.

Copa Airlines had a bright future in Latin America, but the Panamanian airline is now struggling to expand because of an economic slump in the region.
