In yet another sign of Los Cabos, Mexico's miraculous rebound in the wake of devastation brought on by Hurricane Odile just six months ago, Alaska Airlines is set to launch nonstop service from John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, to the popular resort city.
Alaska also plans to begin offering direct flights from Orange County to the Mexican beach resort city of Puerto Vallarta later this year as well.
Currently, future operations are pending the approval of Mexico's Directorate General of Civil Aviation. If approved, the new service to Los Cabos will start on Oct. 8, while Alaska's direct flights to Puerto Vallarta will begin on Oct. 9.
"For years, Orange County residents have been able to fly Alaska to Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta from either Los Angeles or San Diego," said Alaska's vice president of capacity planning John Kirby in a statement. "With Alaska's new nonstop service, our OC customers can avoid heavy traffic and save time by flying directly out of John Wayne Airport."
Alaska's announcement comes on the heels of Los Cabos Tourism Board commercial director-chief commercial offier Luis Palacios stating his goal of increasing air connectivity to the destination in an effort to drive tourism growth.
"From 2011 to 2015, Los Cabos added an unprecedented 800,000 airline seats," said Palacios. "There’s no growth like this at any other airport in Mexico."
Alaska is poised to join Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Southwest Airlines in offering new nonstop service to Los Cabos.
Alaska's service between Orange County and Los Cabos will be operated with Boeing 737 aircraft and run four days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday).
The other three days will feature service between Orange County and Puerto Vallarta.
To celebrate the upcoming service, Alaska will offer introductory one-way fares starting at $144 between Orange County and Los Cabos and $164 between Orange County and Puerto Vallarta. However those fares only apply to tickets purchases by April 6 for travel completed by Dec. 11.
