American Airlines was in a giving mood this week and decided to up and give away its complement of in-flight entertainment for free.

The airline joins the likes of Delta, which offered a similar deal to its passengers back in June.

According to its Newsroom, American will begin giving away its premium in-flight entertainment content away for free in the main cabin starting this month.

If you have a trip planned for the remainder of the summer, we hope the flight offers enough time to binge watch “Game of Thrones” or take in the awesome power of Steve Rogers and his band of super-powered rebels in “Captain America: Civil War.”

Fernand Fernandez, American’s vice president – Global Marketing, took a quick verbal victory lap, “American is further investing in and personalizing how our customers travel by giving them the most in-flight entertainment options onboard our aircraft.”

Fernandez continued, ballyhooing American’s value to future passengers: “Our employees do an outstanding job taking care of our customers and combined with a fleet of aircraft that is the youngest of the U.S. carriers and onboard products like complimentary premium entertainment and snacks, American is creating an unmatched travel experience that all of our customers can enjoy.”

Now there are some caveats as there tends to be with these types of announcements. The most obvious is the free premium content will be offered on those planes that already have seatback screens or Wi-Fi.

As noted in the release, American planes with seatback solutions represent 300 airplanes of the entirety of the fleet, so chances are good that your flight will be equipped, especially when you consider that, “all American domestic mainline aircraft and two-class regional jets offer in-flight Wi-Fi.”

It should be noted that the entertainment will be offered for free on all domestic flights. But after that, you are good to download the app and enjoy American’s library of shows and movies on that screen on the back of your neighbor’s seat or on that precious device you are undoubtedly toting to your next destination.

This is, of course, wonderful news to the modern traveler. Seeing the likes of Delta and American Airlines come out and give away something so crucial to our in-flight sanity is a welcomed sign.

Besides free sustenance, entertainment remains the one way to placate a cabin full of adults that are crammed next to strangers for a few hours. Suddenly, the trip doesn’t seem so bad if we can watch movies and re-runs of hit shows for free.

It’s a small but precious joy that we can all enjoy and rather appreciate.
