Can coffee really keep you grounded? Well, unfortunately the answer is yes.

The New York Times reports that coffee can actually cause flight delays—and in more than one way.

According to the Times article, coffeemakers on flights aren’t like your at-home brew machines. They are much more intricate and therefore more complicated to fix — and when they cause problems, it can lead to entire flights being grounded.

“You can’t just put Mr. Coffee in an airline,” said Jeff Lowe, president of Aviation Fabricators, a certified airplane repair station in Clinton, Mo. “You have to do all kinds of engineering and analysis and provide test results to the F.A.A. to get approval.”

Oftentimes, when one of these machines breaks down, they are quickly replaced by a new one or a working spare. But if there’s no spare on hand, then the machines have to be disabled by a mechanic — meaning no cup of joe onboard, and we all know what that leads to: passenger outrage and angry Twitter posts.
