If ever get stuck with a long layover, you don’t have to spend it trapped inside the airport force feeding yourself fried foods and watered down cocktails.

Many cities give travelers the chance to see the sights with free city tours.

Conde Nast Traveler showcases eight such cities that offer mini tours for those with some extra time on their hands, starting with Taipei, which offers two free tours, says Lilit Marcus.

“Tour A ferries guests to the gorgeous Zushih Temple, about 14 miles outside of town, and on a trip to shop for pottery; Tour B packs in quicker stops to some of Taiwan's most famous sites, including the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and Taipei 101, the country's tallest building,” writes Marcus.

Singapore’s airport has so many fun things to do (ice skating, a butterfly garden, a movie theater), there’s almost no reason to leave. Should you want to, however, there are two free city tours for those who are transiting with six or more hours in between flights.

“The City Sights tour hits all the downtown highlights like the Merlion and Gardens By the Bay, while the Heritage Tour focuses on exploring cool neighborhoods like Little India and Kampong Glam,” notes Marcus.

For those who have some time to pass in Tokyo, you can choose between a shopping tour and a cultural tour.

One of the coolest layover tours can be found in Amsterdam.

“If you're flying national carrier KLM and have a layover of six hours or more, you can sign up for the airline's "layover with a local" program. Fill out a quick questionnaire about your interests (fashion, food, tech, etc) and KLM will pair you up with an English-speaking local with similar likes, give you free bus tickets into town and back to the airport, and pay for the first round of drinks when you meet your new pal at a bar in central Amsterdam,” suggests Marcus.
