Etihad Airways continues its march with its latest equity investment in another airline with the approval of Switzerland’s Federal Office of Civil Aviation of its investment in Darwin Airline.
The approval clears the way for Etihad, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, to complete its proposed 33.3 percent investment in Darwin, which is a regional airline based in Lugano, Switzerland. Darwin has been operating since January 2014 as Etihad Regional under a branding partnership agreement with Etihad.
Now with the approval of FOCA, Etihad and Darwin can continue to put in place a partnership that will include codesharing.
Etihad has not become a member of any of the major airline alliances, preferring instead a strategy of investment in and partnership with other airlines.
Etihad Airways already holds equity investments in airberlin, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles, Aer Lingus, Alitalia, Jet Airways and Virgin Australia.
Etihad also maintains branding agreements with airberlin, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles, Alitalia, Etihad Regional, Jet Airways and NIKI as Etihad Airways Partners.
Founded in 2003, Etihad claims to be the fastest growing airline in history. In 2014 it carried 14.8 million passengers. It flies to 111 passenger or cargo destinations.
