Mexican authorities announced Wednesday that security officers at airports in Mexico have started increasing their focus on checking laptops and tablets on flights heading to the United States.
The heightened security measures come at the recommendation of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
According to The Associated Press, officials from Mexico's Transportation Department revealed that the increased security screening procedures would apply to all electronics larger than a cell phone.
While no details about the new security measures were revealed, Mexican authorities have advised travelers to avoid packing laptops and tablets in carry-on luggage as often as possible. If airline passengers do pack the larger electronic devices in their bags, they will need to be removed and taken out of their cases or covers for inspection.

The improved security measures by Mexican officials come after the DHS imposed a laptop ban in March on departing flights from 10 airports in the Middle East as part of an effort to combat the possibility that terrorists could smuggle explosives via larger electronic devices.
On June 28, the DHS unveiled additional security measures for all foreign flights arriving in the U.S. The impacted airports and airlines have acted quickly to have the ban lifted.
