Qatar Airways Earns Title of World's Best Airline in 2015

Move over Cathay Pacific, 2015 belongs to Qatar Airways.

Travel consultancy Skytrax has revealed that the Middle Eastern carrier earned top honors in its annual World Airline Awards, which are voted for by millions of air travelers worldwide.

"In a relatively short time, Qatar Airways has grown to more than 140 destinations worldwide, offering levels of service excellence that helped the award-winning carrier to become best in the world," states the awards' official website.

Last year's winner, Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific ranked third in 2015, behind second-place Singapore Airlines. Despite some slight movement, the top five airlines remained unchanged as 2014 top-five finishers Turkish Airlines and Emirates rounded out this year's top five.

The remaining top 10 airlines comprised Etihad Airways (United Arab Emirates), ANA All Nippon Airways (Japan), Garuda Indonesia (Indonesia), EVA Air (Taiwan) and Qantas Airways (Australia).

Other notable airlines include Lufthansa, which fell out of the top 10 and two spots to No. 12, and Malaysia Airlines, which dropped six spots to No. 24.

Virgin America was the top-ranked U.S.-based airline at No. 26. The California-based carrier rose a whopping 20 spots after ranking No. 46 last year. However Delta Air Lines (No. 45) and JetBlue Airways (No. 50) were the only other two U.S. airlines to crack Skytrax's top 50 this year.

Both airlines came in higher that last year, though. Delta rose four spots, while JetBlue climbed nine.

United Airlines fell seven spots to No. 60, while Alaska Airlines and Southwest Airlines weren't far behind at Nos. 65 and 67 respectively.

Despite rising 10 spots in 2015, American Airlines still ranked No. 79.

In addition to being named world's best airline, Qatar Airways was recognized for boasting the world's best business class seats. The carrier also ranked second in best in-flight entertainment.
