The busiest airport in the Pacific Northwest experienced a new level of busy in 2014.

According to Anna.Aero, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport reported a record 37.5 million passengers last year, representing a massive 7.7 percent increase over 2013's total traffic figure and marking the fourth consecutive year of achieving record traffic.

For perspective on how far Sea-Tac has come, consider that it saw just 26.8 million passengers pass through in 2003.

The growth figure ranks Sea-Tac second behind only North Carolina's Charlotte Douglas International Airport (10 percent) as the fastest growing among the U.S.'s top 20 airports. And with more than 37 million air travelers passing through Sea-Tac last year, it has surpassed Orlando International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport for 13th on the list of busiest in the U.S.

As for how 2014's record traffic breaks down, the airport's biggest operator, Alaska Airlines, combined with its regional subsidiary Horizon Air to carry more than half (51 percent) of the 37.5 million passengers (19.3 million).

Meanwhile, Alaska Airlines' top competitor, Delta Air Lines, accounted for 14.5 percent of 2014's total figure (5.4 million).

Although Delta trails Alaska in that area, it's currently the fastest-expanding carrier at Sea-Tac with an annual increase in weekly seats of 68 percent. Keep in mind that the Atlanta-based airline has introduced more than a dozen new airport pairs over the past year.

Southwest Airlines, United Airlines and American Airlines round out the top five respectively in terms of weekly departing seats.

Looking ahead, though, Sea-Tac is currently on pace to surpass 2014's growth and set a new traffic record.

Four-plus months into 2015, the airport has experienced 13 percent growth, beating out a majority of the U.S.'s other major airports.
