Southwest Airlines Announces Plans for LGBT Pride Month and Beyond

The support for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) communities continue to build, and Southwest Airlines is hosting a celebration in June for LGBT Pride Month, but the support expends far beyond June.

The company has been sponsoring an array of community partner activities across the United States throughout 2015, but will amp up some of the events in June and the remainder of the year to raise awareness.

In addition to the support the company shows LGBT passengers, Southwest and Accenture will co-host an event June 24 dubbed The Power of Inclusion: LGBT Pride Month Celebration featuring retired NBA player Jason Collins. The former NBA player will tell of his extraordinary journey as the first openly gay player in the league.

The event will also include employees from Southwest Airlines and Accenture gathering together at the airline's Dallas headquarters for learning sessions and parties.

Southwest Airlines vice president of diversity and inclusion, Ellen Torbert, released a statement about the company’s commitment to the LGBT community:

“Southwest Airlines is proud of our commitment to the communities we serve. We have been a longtime supporter of the LGBT community and are pleased to champion their work to promote inclusive environments, and we are proud of the relationships we have with our local, regional, and national community partners. These nonprofit organizations work hard to make a positive difference in the LGBT Community.”

Southwest’s commitment to the LGBT community doesn’t stop there, though. In August the airline will sponsor the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce's conference and in September the company is the official airline sponsor of the Cream City Foundation’s Equality Business Luncheon.

As for October, Southwest will sponsor two separate events, including the Out & Equal's 2015 Workplace Summit and One Community’s Spotlight on Success Local Heroes Awards.
