A passenger got an unpleasant surprise while waiting for Alaska Airlines Flight 567 to take off from Los Angeles International Airport on Saturday: She was stung by a scorpion, NBC News Los Angeles reported.
The jet, carrying Oregon State University Men's and The University of Portland's Women's Basketball teams, was close to its 7:50 p.m. departure for Portland, Ore. when the sting was brought to the attention of the crew, according to Alaska Airlines spokesman Cole Cosgrove.
Treated, then released at the gate by medics, the woman did not re-board the flight. The offending scorpion was found and killed by the crew, who also checked the overhead compartments for any other spindly-legged creatures. The sweep delayed the flight for 40 minutes.
The airline is unsure how the scorpion sneaked aboard. The flight originated in Los Cabos, Mexico.
Air passenger scorpion stings are rare but not unprecedented. A woman flying back from Italy was stung on the foot in June, 2012.
