Taking A Short Flight on American? Bring A Sandwich.

Starting Sept. 1, American is doing away with meals in first and business class on most flights of two hours and 45 minutes or less. The carrier said it wanted to marry up with an existing policy on US Airways, which American merged with last December.

Instead, premium passengers will get a snack - think packaged pretzels - for flights of two hours or less, and a snack basket for flights up to 2:45 that will also include fruits, breads and other packaged goodies.

In an email to frequent travelers, American said "We're preserving signature elements that have set apart American's meal service, like our popular warm mixed nuts on meal flights, warm cookies and premium desserts."

American will keep meals for premium passengers on about a dozen of its most heavily used routes by business travelers, such as Dallas to Chicago, Chicago to New York, etc.
