Most travelers dig deep for a deal when planning a trip. But what if money's no object?
Enlisting the help of the Airlines Reporting Corportation, Yahoo Travel recently took a closer look at the most expensive round-trip flights a traveler could book.
The results of the research include only round-trip economy-class tickets, exclude any outlier tickets of over $50,000 and less than $50 and only include flights with competitive service.
Coming in at $9,242, the 10,620-mile trip from Jakarta, Indonesia to Johannesburg, South Africa is the most expensive a traveler can take. Specifically, departing from Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) and arriving in Johannesburg's O. R. Tambo International Airport.
No other flight totaled more than $6,700.
Routes departing from airports in Indoesia and Japan dominate the top 10, with Tokyo's Narita International Airport (NRT) accounting for three of the top eight. Papeete, French Polynesia's Fa'a'a International Airport ($6,681) is the most expensive destination from NRT, while journeys from NRT to Guanajuato International Airport in Silao, Mexico ($4,735) and Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky ($4,423) will still break the bank.
Meanwhile, New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) combine to account for four of the most expensive route destinations.
Flying economy from CGK to JFK will cost you $4,905, making it the fifth-most expensive route in the world.
But a journey from London City Airport to JFK ($4,710) isn't much cheaper.
Among U.S. routes, flying 8,700 miles from Alabama's Huntsville International Airport to Honolulu International Airport (HNL) is a surefire way to drain your bank account, with a round-trip economoy ticket running roughly $1,225.
What's more, destinations in Hawaii account for nine of the top 10 most expensive U.S. routes. Maui's Kahului Airport makes four appearances in the top 10, while HNL accounts for three of the top four.
Oddly enough, flying from IAH to Bismarck Municipal Airport in North Dakota will cost $1,189, making it the sixth most expensive U.S. route and the only one in the top 10 that doesn't include Hawaii.
