United Airlines is joining the growing ranks of major carriers expanding their Caribbean service. UA will operate 50 percent more flights between Newark Liberty Airport and Robert L. Bradshaw International airport in St. Kitts compared with 2015 when the airline’s winter schedule resumes in November, officials announced Tuesday.

The airline will commence winter service on Nov. 19 with weekly service departing Saturdays through the fall of 2017. The flights will utilize United’s 737-800 aircraft with capacity ranging from 154 to 166 seats. This new service will complement UA’s existing non-stop airlift into St. Kitts from North America.

"The extension of United's service will significantly increase capacity into the Federation from the New York metro area, a primary market for visitors to St. Kitts," said Lindsay Grant, St. Kitts’ minister of tourism, international trade, industry & commerce.

St. Kitts and Nevis hosted 60,927 overnight visitors in between January and June of 2015, a solid 6.6 percent increase over the same period in 2015. Tourism growth is evident across St. Kitts and Nevis, even as the country hosts a fraction of the Caribbean vacationers hosted annually by the leading regional destinations, which all attract well over one million visitors annually.

Plans include a cruise ship pier for the 2016 season, and last year’s launch of Kittitian Hill, a collection of upscale guest houses set on a 400-acre organic farm on St. Kitts’ north coast, added a new option for upscale travelers. A Park Hyatt hotel is also scheduled to open this year.
