Feel like catching a break on airfares? Late August could be your moment to strike.

Experts say a simple case of supply (too much) and demand (not enough) in late summer will drop airfares as we head into fall. It's not so much about airlines throwing travelers a bone as it is about fewer people traveling, as vacations come to an end and school, including college, begins.

According to Hopper Research, where airlines and airports are analyzed, ticket prices in August will be about five percent lower than the same period last year, averaging at $244 for a round-trip fare according to Fortune magazine.

“Typically, prices will fall during the latter part of summer before stabilizing in the fall and early winter,” Patrick Surry, Hopper’s chief data scientist, told Fortune. “Since this summer was cheaper than last summer, we expect prices to remain lower than last year through the rest of this year, returning slightly closer to normal by the end of the year.”

Here is Founder and CEO Mark Murphy talking about the expected drop in fares on Fox News.
