WATCH: British Airways Pilots Navigate Tricky Landing

If for some reason you have the need to fly multiple times on British Airways from London’s Gatwick Airport to Funchal, the capital city of Portugal’s autonomous island of Madeira, don’t be surprised to see the same pilot.
The airport at Funchal is one of the challenging landing strips in the world. It not only requires special approval from the Portuguese aviation authority to fly into the city, but British Airways requires its pilots who fly there to have special training and approval.
Thus, there are only 20 pilots in the carrier’s entire fleet who are authorized to make such a landing at Funchal.
Last month, BA began flying to Funchal from Gatwick, and in this video airline captains Ally Wilcox and Ian Mills give you a first-hand look at how they must navigate the tricky landing.
