You ride them all the time, but what exactly goes into the care and maintenance of the planes we love?
The team over at Emirates showed us exactly what it takes in a time-lapsed, 45-second clip, where they repainted an Airbus A380-the largest commercial plane in the world-and applied a Los Angeles Dodgers logo.
The entire process is a whirlwind of activity in a process that actually took 34 employees almost 6,000 man-hours over 15 days to apply seven different coats of paint. Those fifteen days represent a massive time commitment, but it was also a company record time.
In a statement, Emirates pointed out that the process isn't just for aesthetic purposes, as the paint job actually improves operating and technical performance and can actually reduce the weight of the plane, improving fuel costs in a major way.
This paint job shaved hundreds of kilograms off of the fleet.
According to Emirates, an A380 is repeated after every seven to eight years of service, or earlier if the aircraft requires it. As the world's largest operator and customer of the A380, Emirates is expected to repaint more A380s than any other airline in the years to come.
