WATCH: Mark Murphy Discusses Delta Air Lines Controversy

In the wake of reports that Delta Air Lines is limiting access to its flight information by shunning online travel agencies like TripAdvisor, TravelPulse founder and CEO Mark Murphy recently appeared on Fox Business' The Willis Report to provide some background and offer tips for air travelers.

Drawing comparisons to budget carrier Southwest Airlines, Murphy explained the motivation behind Delta's decision to reduce the visibility of its airfares.

"They have transaction costs associated with those websites," said Murphy. "By taking the transaction directly on their airline site they don't have to worry about that, so they cut those costs."

"It's ironic because this all started back in the 1990s when the airlines formed a website called Orbitz. They formed a website to compete against the Expedias of the world...and today they're fighting the online travel sites."

Murphy said he considers Delta's actions anti-consumer but offered a word of advice for affected travelers: "I'd talk to a travel agent."
