Sometimes, getting on the road and just driving is the best way to see the most beautiful scenery in the country you are visiting.
Here are 7 ultimate road trips to take with your Auto Europe rental car.
Step on the gas and channel your inner Dale Earnhardt Jr. on the famous Autobahn in Germany, especially in areas that have absolutely no speed limits. This network takes you through more than 8,000 miles of beautiful German countryside. Don’t worry though, not everyone will whiz by you and you’re not required to floor it, so feel free to slow down and take it all in.
Also located in Germany, another must-drive road trip to take is Romantic Road, which was built in the 1950s. On this drive, you will see medieval villages, the Wurzburg Residence, and the Fortress Marienberg. In the south end, you will drive near King Ludwig II’s iconic Neuschwanstein Castle.
In Norway, we’re not quite sure you will any trolls on Trollstigen mountain road, also known as Troll’s Road, one of Norway's most visited attractions that was built in 1936. However, it is still worth the drive on the 65-mile long stretch of road though with its 11 hairpin turns, and its beautiful view of the mountains, waterfalls and valleys.

Taking a drive on the southern coast of Italy, the Amalfi Coast, is molto bello (very beautiful!). It can literally take your breath away and is one of the most romantic places in southern Italy. As you drive through, check out the colorful hotels and buildings that are seemingly imbedded on the side of a mountain. Drive over to Positano, one of the romantic villages on the Amalfi Coast and explore its winding passageways. Stop and have a glass of Limoncello – the area is famous for its production of the liquor.
In France, you’ll be saying oui oui as you drive La Route des Grandes Alpes in France, because you’ll pass through Geneva Lake, four national parks and a whopping 16 mountain passes that are the highest in the Alps.
Portugal’s Estoril Coast Drive must be on the list of drives that you take in your lifetime. It transports you from Lisbon to Sintra, hugging the River Tagus and the Estoril beaches along the way. Make sure to pull over, put the car into park and visit the National Palace of Sintra, also called Town Palace. It is a medieval Royal Palace in Portugal, and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If you want to bring yourself to the edge while you’re driving – and we mean the edge -- then you must drive on Norway’s Atlantic Road, which opened in 1989 and is toll free. This road has been called one of the most dangerous to drive as the ocean literally throws itself onto the road as you’re passing through, but the scenery is worth the treachery for those who have strong wills. There are places to stop and climb a rock, take photos and enjoy the salty air.
