Turkeys are getting stuffed and stockings are being placed by chimneys with care. This must mean it’s the Christmas season, which the rail industry is celebrating with the mirth and merriment the season deserves.
Here is our brief but beautiful breakdown of myriad rail excursions departing over the next month that will put you and your family smack dab into the holiday season.
While each bears its own particular whimsy, the holidays are well represented throughout this list.
Now if we managed to skip your favorite Santa sojourn, please feel free to ho, ho, holler at us accordingly.
Santa Claus brings his big, jolly self along for one heck of a ride around Anchorage this December.
This trip is so popular that Alaska Railroad Vacations decided to add one more week to the list.
Batesville has one of the more beloved excursions with its Polar Express train ride that features Mr. Claus himself as well as singing elves.
As the website reminds, the best way to enjoy a jaunt to the North Pole is in your pajamas.
We thought Batesville, a location inundated with interest, deserved its own hat tip. However, those of you not near the location are in luck.
Rail Events boasts a bunch of rail journeys dedicated to the popular The Polar Express, which is based on the book that later inspired a movie.
The website explains what you can expect in each journey: “Set to the sounds of the motion picture soundtrack, families are sure to enjoy their trip to the North Pole, complete with hot chocolate and cookies served on board the train. Passengers will then be entertained by a reading of The Polar Express. Upon arrival at the North Pole, Santa will greet the children and each child will receive their own sleigh bell, just like in the movie, to those who BELIEVE.”
Sacramento River Train runs the aptly titled Christmas Train, which “includes the 90 minute train ride plus music, cookies and hot cocoa in a souvenir mug!”
The journey follows a storyline of “a little girl who has lost her Christmas spirit and now her Teddy Bear is missing, too!”
We surely hope the Teddy Bear is found by the end of the ride, because missing Teddy Bears are the No. 1 travel worry according to a made-up fact we just created.
If you crave a bit more of an adventure, you can take on the beauty and wonder of Canada as you explore our neighbor’s portion of the Rockies: “Celebrate the holiday season in the Canadian Rockies! Pair a stay in Vancouver featuring glittering lights and seasonal festivities with overnight train travel aboard Canada's premier overnight train, the Canadian, and local seasonal celebrations in Jasper National Park, Lake Louise, and Banff.”
Here’s a little something for the adults who like to enjoy a little cheer amid their travels.
The Christmas Wine Train’s website states: “Each guest will receive delicious heavy passed hors d'oeuvres served on board the train by Chill catering and two complimentary glasses of wine from Messina Hof Winery in a Grapevine Vintage Railroad wine glass.”
Strasburg is getting into the spirit big time with various Christmas-themed excursions, including the above Night Before Christmas journey.
There is also a Christmas Tree Train, Santa’s Paradise Express and Christmas Feast train. It’s enough to book a flight to Pennsylvania simply to ride these amazing tours.
According to the website, “Your paid ticket aboard Santa's Pizza Party includes the two-hour train ride, 1/2 pizza per person and your first soda.”
A pizza party with Santa is essentially your childhood knocking on the door asking to be let in for the season.
We suggest you open up and set out some cookies, because 2015 is shaping up to be some kind of wonderful.
