Amtrak officials have announced that anyone can now subscribe to automated email or text message notifications about train schedules and delays.
This is a change from previous rules that only allowed customers holding reservations or tickets to use the service.
The Amtrak automatic train status alert system comes at no charge to consumers, except when data and message charges are applied by cellular carriers. It is the ideal tool to stay informed of the latest news and changes from the rail company.
The train status alert system will allow customers to check whether trains are traveling on time, monitor travel options and ensure they are at the right station at the correct time to pick up a friend, coworker or family member.
For travelers who purchase multi-ride tickets-including monthly, six- and 10-ride boarding passes-the improvements to the automated system will keep tabs on their reservations since they are not linked to specific train numbers.

Notifications from the train status alert system can be issued for as many as six trains and stations and are delivered when needed-including every day or just certain days of the week. The improved program also allows customers to modify or delete notifications at any time.
Customers can sign up for the automatic train status alert system by visiting Amtrak's official website.
