Avis Car Rental is one of the biggest companies in the industry, and the brand continues its expansion with the addition of 100 new Toyota Yaris Hybrid models to its London, England, fleet.
According to FleetWorld.co, the new cars will be available at the Heathrow and Stansted airports, as well as in central London. The company plans on eventually adding the cars to Gatwick and Luton airports as well.
To separate the new automobiles from the rest of the fleet, each Yaris has been outfitted with a red nose on the front to raise awareness for Comic Relief.
Avis UK fleet procurement manager, Jane Goodwin, told FleetWorld.co about why the company decided to add Toyota cars to the fleet and why they have red noses:
“Yaris scores highly in many respects against our requirements for an inner city hire car; it is easy to drive and reliable. The ultra-low emissions secured by its hybrid system make it a unique proposition in its class in achieving exemption from the London congestion charge. We are pleased also to support Toyota’s fund-raising efforts for Comic Relief by adding a red nose to each new vehicle.”
As Goodwin mentioned, the decision to ride with Yaris was a result of the London congestion charge, a fee that is charged for many vehicles operating within the congestion charge zone during a specified time. Avis would skirt the system with the Toyota cars.
The fully-hybrid Yaris has emissions of 75 g/km, according to FleetWorld.co, and is exempt from the congestion charge. The car also converts to electric power when it comes to a complete stop, cutting emissions and fuel consumption to zero.
Adding 100 new cars to the fleet is a major accomplishment, but the smaller carbon footprint Avis is leaving proves the company is thinking big picture. The smaller cars also should mean lower prices for travelers and locals alike.
