One of the newest phenomena in auto rental is community-sharing, and peer-to-peer car service provider FlightCar is making waves in the industry by opening a branch near Portland International Airport.
According to Fox 12 Oregon, the newest branch of FlightCar is located at a Holiday Inn near the airport. Consumers can drop off their car at the hotel before they got on their flight, free of charge, and FlightCar rents the vehicle to someone who just arrived in Portland.
Instead of paying to leave your car in the long-term airport parking lot, the peer-to-peer auto rental service actually allows consumers to make a few extra dollars while they are out of town, roughly five to 40 cents per mile.
FlightCar co-founder Kevin Petrovic told Fox 12, “On an average seven-day trip, I'd say people can expect to make, like 30 or 40 dollars, in addition to saving over 100.”
While there are some unique advantages to the business model, there are some legitimate concerns. The company is doing its best to avoid any issues by offering a full insurance package worth $1 million and limiting renters to no more than 100 miles per day, according to Fox 12.
The company also claims the consumer will get their car back fully washed and filled with gas.
There will naturally be concerns about the safety and effectiveness of the FlightCar service, but offering cheaper rental cars and even paying people while they’re out of town is an intriguing concept that travelers could consider in the future.
