The Latest Routes, Deals and Developments in European Rail

As the dollar continues to do its limbo shimmy at $1.08 to the euro, Americans are finding Europe a bargain this year, and Rail Europe continues to put out deals that add value to the journey. Rail companies are adding new destinations, new conveniences, new products and yes, new discounts to direct this bumper crop of travelers onto the tracks this fall and summer even as new products come on line for luxury travelers. Rail Europe, Belmond, Abercrombie & Kent and Hello Italy Tours are making Europe more interesting this year.
Rail Europe has a trio of bargains that are worth looking at if you have plans for heading to France, Germany and beyond. Travelers to Germany this summer can receive a two-day extension on a 10-day German Rail Pass and a four-day extension on the 15-day pass for travel completed by Oct. 31 when purchased through Rail Europe. Travelers can also take advantage of 20 percent off all German activities when purchased in concert with a German Rail Pass or German Rail Pass. Now through Sept. 29 those booking and using the coupon code Oktoberfest20 when booking German Activities on German Rail Pass will get 20 percent off for travel through Oct. 31.
Rail Europe is also offering $50 off a First Class France Rail Pass in celebration of its new expanded France Rail Pass product line. To get the discount you must use the coupon code SAVE50FRANCE when booking the pass, now through Aug. 14. The offer is valid in first class for Adult, Youth, Senior and Saver Passes.
There are also summer discounts on France and Beyond tickets on various TGV high-speed routes between top destinations to cities including Paris, Lyon, Nice, Milan, Frankfurt and Brussels for those booking now through Aug. 21, for travel through Aug, 31 for first class service and Intercités train tickets. Prices start at $42, and are subject to availability and change.

Venice Simplon-Orient-Express Heads to Berlin
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express will bring all of its 1920s-era glamor to one of the great capitals of the 1920s, Berlin, in 2016 on a new route linking London, Paris and Berlin. The inaugural departure leaves from London to Berlin via Paris on June 2, 2016. Departing London, the two-day, one-night journey from London traverses Northern France and the German countryside before arriving in Berlin for the weekend. The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express makes its return journey from Berlin to Paris or London on June 4, 2016. Prices start from £2,210 ($3,458) per person sharing a double cabin includes all meals served on board.
A&K Combines Scotland and Ireland
One of Abercrombie & Kent’s special Marco Polo Journeys will join Scotland and Ireland together in an 11-night trip that includes four night on the soon-to-launch Belmond Grand Hibernian. The journey will include a stay on the Old Course at St. Andrews, and visits to a Scottish whisky distillery, Loch Leven Castle and Falkland Palace and a tour of the ruins of Blarney Castle. Travelers can choose between a visit to the Cliffs of Moher or golfing at world-class courses. The package is priced from $11,995.
