On Wednesday in New York City, ride-hailing service Lyft is offering free rides in DeLorean cars sporting “Back to the Future” movie franchise themes.
Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015, is Back to the Future Day thanks to this being the date Marty McFly and Doc Brown traveled to in the 1989 sequel, "Back to the Future II," to save McFly's future son.
In the movie, the date — October 21, 2015 — can be seen on the time machine inside Doc’s DeLorean.
Lyft teamed up with Universal Pictures and Verizon Wireless to offer customers who download the app the chance to use the McFly Mode. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Wednesday, app users can request to be picked up by a DeLorean and will be entitled to a 15-minute drive inside the vehicle.
Marie Pacilio shared an image on Twitter of the cars on site in NYC:
While the rides will be free to celebrate Back to the Future Day, the speed limit in New York City is 25 miles per hour. For those hoping to get the DeLorean up to 88 miles per hour so they can travel through time, maybe next Back to the Future Day.
The number of DeLorean cars pulled out of mothballs for this event is unclear, but fans of the "Back to the Future" movie franchise who also happens to be in the New York City will definitely be putting them to use in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
