Setting sail on the open ocean is one of the most romantic ways to be together as a couple - and there are more than a few destinations around the world that spur romance on the water - even in this day and age when cruise ships have so much to offer on board the destinations they travel to could almost become secondary.
Sally MacMillan reports for the Border Mail that there are several ideal destinations for a romantic cruise - and she begins Down Under.
First on her list is the Milford Sound in New Zealand.
"Misty, mysterious, deeply peaceful: even when the dramatic cliffs and snowy mountain peaks are shrouded in clouds it inspires peaceful contemplation," notes MacMillan.
Tahiti is a more obvious choice for a romantic sojourn at sea.
"Sapphire lagoons, emerald-green mountain peaks, diamond-clear water - French Polynesia's tropical islands have long been a favourite haven for artists, honeymooners and romantics," she says.
Venice, Italy, is another romantic hotspot when it comes to cruising.

Two of the world's most famous lovers, Casanova and Lord Byron, lived and played in La Serenissima," MacMillan says.
