Carnival Names 33-Year Veteran to Oversee Trade Sales
Adolfo Perez, a 33-year veteran of Carnival Cruise Line, is the company’s new vice president of trade sales and marketing, effective June 2.
In this role, Perez will be the primary liaison to the travel agent community with responsibility for the business development teams and trade marketing functions. He will report to Lynn Torrent, Carnival’s executive vice president of sales and guest services.
Although the title is different, Perez’s responsibilities are essentially the same as those handled by Joni Rein, vice president of worldwide sales, who is departing the company effective Aug. 1. One difference is that Perez will continue to serve as head of commercial operations for Carnival’s U.K. business while based in Miami Beach.
Perez joined Carnival in 1982 as an embarkation agent and has held multiple managerial positions in the reservations and sales departments, including vice president of reservations sales. He most recently served as the company’s vice president of new markets and new product marketing.
“I will be the trade advocate at Carnival Cruise Line,” Perez told Travel Pulse. “I used to run the call centers, so in my role as head of reservations, I obviously dealt a lot with the trade, either working on specific issues or trying to figure out ways to help them do business easier. I absolutely worked with them for many years and have good relationships with lot of them.”
He acknowledged that Carnival’s relationship with travel agents has been rocky at times, but noted that the Carnival Conversations program instituted by Torrent and Rein has “absolutely improved the relationship.
“Carnival Conversations definitely made an impact,” he said. “We got quite a bit of feedback, and changes were made along the way. It’s a great vehicle to capture information on what’s going on in the trade and what things are impacting them. I think it’s a valuable tool. Whether there are ways to make it better and enhance it are things I need to look at it. The idea of it is still pretty great, and getting direct feedback from them is invaluable.”
Perez’s experience also includes serving as managing director of the company’s U.K. office, where he established Carnival’s travel professional sales network and led the line’s strategic growth initiatives in that country, while overseeing all trade engagement and sales and marketing efforts.
“Adolfo is a seasoned travel professional with a true passion for cruising and an appreciation for the valuable and important role that travel agents play in the cruise-selling process,” said Carnival President Christine Duffy. “We considered both internal and external candidates for this role and felt that Adolfo’s years of experience in the industry and his commitment to the agency community made him the best fit for the job. I am confident that his outstanding leadership skills will serve the trade and our team of sales professionals in the field very well.”
