MSC Cruises has received an award for sustainable and environmental stewardship on its ship MSC Meraviglia. The "8 Golden Pearls" award from international certification agency Bureau Veritas recognizes Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental management.

MSC Cruises is the first cruise line to receive the award.

Bureau Veritas recognized MSC Meraviglia for eight areas of distinction. They include gas cleaning and waste water treatment systems. Energy-saving materials onboard improve efficiency and reduce the ship's environmental impact. Occupational health management programs for crew well-being and food safety management programs from "farm to fork" were also cited.

MSC Meraviglia also earned the CLEANSHIP recognition from Bureau Veritas. That award recognizes the line's efforts to meet strict environmental standards globally.

"MSC Cruises has demonstrated its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of their operations and we commend the Company for its wide-ranging, ongoing efforts in this space," said Philippe Donche-Gay, Bureau Veritas' president for marine and offshore.

"The various sustainable and environmental technologies installed on MSC Meraviglia put the ship at the forefront of cleaner cruise operations. The Bureau Veritas 8 Golden Pearls award reflects MSC Cruises' commitment to excellence and continual improvement in environmental performance."

Bud Darr, Executive Vice President Maritime Policy and Government Affairs for the MSC Group said the line looks forward to "making further progress in the area of environmental stewardship."

MSC Meraviglia entered service in June 2017 as the line's 13th ship. She's finishing her winter inaugural season in the Mediterranean. On April 18, 2018 the ship departs Genoa for Northern Europe and a home port in Hamburg. She'll sail in the North Sea, Baltic Sea and the Norwegian Heritage Fjords up to the Arctic Sea, exploring Cape North and the Svalbard Islands.

MSC Cruises plans to expand its global fleet to 24 ships by 2026.
