The annual Seatrade Cruise Awards deemed Liverpool "Destination of the Year" for 2015.

While Liverpool Cruise Terminal has made significant strides over the past year, the recognition is nothing new for the popular port as its won the Cruise Critic's "Port of Call of the Year" award in each of the past two years, the Liverpool Echo reported.

"We are delighted to be named as winner of this prestigious award which is incredible recognition for Liverpool," Liverpool Cruise Manager and Cruise Britain chair Angie Redhead told the Echo. "The meeting of the Three Queens in May 2015 was not only a highlight for Liverpool and Cunard, but also raised the profile of cruise passenger shipping around the world due to the global media coverage it received."

Redhead said the port's efforts to please cruise lines and cruise passengers include things like music, street performances, fireworks and timing major events to cruise calls.

"The award will only help contribute towards the growth of cruise shipping in Liverpool as more and more cruise lines hear that we are one of the best ports in Northern Europe," she concluded.

Liverpool received Seatrade's top honor at the end of a record-breaking 2015 cruise season that saw 54 cruise ships dock, in turn bringing more than 80,000 international visitors to the city.

The terminal will hope to build on that success in 2016 when Disney Cruise Line brings the Disney Magic to Liverpool for the first time.

"We all know that the city is a great destination for cruises and we get amazing feedback from passengers, but it is really important that we spread the message around the world that Liverpool is a wonderful place to visit on a liner," Liverpool City Council Assistant Mayor Cllr Wendy Simon told the Echo. "These awards show that we are making a real impact in the industry, which is vital if we are to attract more vessels to the city."

Previous winners of Seatrade's Destination of the Year include Singapore and Copenhagen.
