When MSC Cruises’ new MSC Seaside launches in December 2017 year-round from Miami, Florida, it will feature a number of shipboard innovations like the longest zip line at sea and an interactive 5D cinema. Besides the release of such new details, the line has also celebrated the cruise ship’s traditional coin ceremony during construction.
Being built by Fincantieri at its Monfalcone, Italy shipyard, the Seaside is just a part of MSC’s massive $10.2 billion expansion program. The 160,000-ton, 4,140-guest ship takes inspiration from a “beach condo concept” to emphasize the surrounding ocean environment. A large gallery of renderings can be viewed in the slideshow below.
“MSC Seaside combines Fincantieri’s Italian flair and excellence in design with MSC Cruises’ global vision and focus on innovation for both hardware and product,” said Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises. “This prototype is significantly different from anything we have ever built before as this is a ship dedicated to cruising in warm seas. The design of the ship embodies our passion for the sea with innovative features to enhance the enjoyment of the open water and sunshine for our guests. With the highest ratio of outdoor spaces on any of MSC Cruises’ ships, guests will also enjoy an increased number of balcony staterooms, sea views and public areas.”
With that in mind, there are outdoor fitness facilities, cabanas for spa treatments and three glass-railed and floored catwalks extending over the sides of the ship. One is almost 100 feet in length stretching across the top deck, and the other two are 130 feet long, making up a portion of the ship’s 360-degree al fresco promenade deck that features outdoor dining venues.
Restaurants will include the previously announced specialty pan-Asian one in partnership with celebrity chef Roy Yamaguchi, plus a seafood restaurant with a chef’s table, an international steakhouse featuring onboard-aged beef and a family pizzeria. There will also be 20 unique bars to enjoy.
“An important feature of an MSC Cruises vacation is the dining experience, which is distinguished by the extensive variety of Mediterranean and international cuisines on offering and wide range of dining formats available,” said Onorato. “Specifically for MSC Seaside, we are developing exciting new dining options for the delight of our guests, with nine eateries featuring cuisines from all around the world including a Pan-Asian restaurant in partnership with acclaimed chef, Roy Yamaguchi, a luxury seafood restaurant with a chef’s table and a world-class international steak house, amongst others.”
As for accommodations, a wide variety will encompass 14 aft corner suites that embody the aforementioned beach condo vibe and modular connected cabins that can sleep up to 10 group or family members. Also, a number of balcony staterooms will feature a terraced configuration with a section of verandas uncovered to bask in the sun. Plus, the exclusive MSC Yacht Club will include a private solarium, lounge and restaurant.
Activities also exhibit a wide range of options from a full-sized bowling alley to a lengthy zip line that stretches from the ship’s funnel to the stern. It will be the longest at sea measuring 425 feet. Also onboard will be a two-deck aqua park complete with a Slideboarding interactive video game-like water slide, other slides and an adventure trail. Additionally, entertainment spaces will include a main theater, comedy club and 5D cinema with kinetic seats, special effects and guest interaction.
At the ceremony, travel agents had an opportunity to see mockups of the ship at the shipyard, and reactions were positive:
“We were so excited to meet with the architects and designers of the beautiful new MSC Seaside – I can tell from her planned layout and attractions that she was designed with the North American cruiser in mind. The innovations from the water park to the 5D cinema and bowling alley and themed restaurants will really appeal to families. As a mother of three, I am intrigued by the ‘kids-only’ restaurant. The coin ceremony tradition is something I have never experienced before, so it’s wonderful to be a part of it and I know our travel agent network is eager to see MSC Seaside come to life and sail in 2017.” – Theresa Scalzitti, VP Sales and Marketing at Cruise Planners, an American Express Travel Representative
“This is a game changer for MSC. The entire Seaside concept – being in touch with the ocean – is great. There are so many unique innovative things. The three deck glass atrium is really well done. I also love how they incorporated the water park inside the funnel area to maintain the classy look of the ship from the outside.” – Amr Younes, Vice President of Sales at Air Canada Vacations
The MSC Seaside is set for launch in December 2017 with a sister ship to follow in 2018, and an option for a third ship may come out in 2021.
