After arriving at Fincantieri's shipyard in Sicily on Monday, MSC Cruises' MSC Sinfonia is set to undergo an extensive renewal project as the cruise line kicks off the second phase of its $273 millioin Renaissance Program.
MSC Sinfonia's sister ship, the MSC Armonia, was the first vessel to receive intensive work before resuming service in November 2014.
MSC Sinfonia will remain at the shipyard for the next 10 weeks as marine engineers add a 78-foot midsection containing 193 extra cabins to the ship.
Afterward, the engineers will renew a significant portion of the ship's interior.
The midsection has been prebuilt and was floated into the shipyard last week. It's scheduled to be inserted into the ship's bisected hull on Jan. 20-21.
MSC Sinfonia, which will feature several clubs for children and teens in addition to a new lounge and extended restaurant, is scheduled to depart from the shipyard and begin a voyage to Genoa on March 25.
Following the completion of work on the MSC Sinfonia, the MSC Opera (May 2 to July 4) and MSC Lirica (Aug. 31 to Nov. 2) will both undergo renewal as part of the Renaissance Program in 2015.
The cruise line aims to serve 80,000 guests daily and 3.4 million annually by 2022 when the Renaissance Program is completed.
