Royal Caribbean International's Navigator of the Seas will resume year-round service from Galveston on Feb. 5 after getting "virtual balconies," several new restaurants and a FlowRider surf simulator in a month-long renovation.
The so-called virtual balconies - a first for the line and appearing in 81 interior staterooms - feature live video of the sea and destinations to give the feeling that the occupant is looking out a real window. Also added are Panoramic Ocean View staterooms, which have floor-to-ceiling glass walls.
Navigator of the Seas now has eight dining options, including the new modern Mexican specialty restaurant Sabor. Menu items include Oaxacan ceviche of red snapper, spicy chicken flautas and empanadas with chicken and roasted corn, as well as guacamole and salsas made tableside. Sabor has a service charge of $25 per guest.
Navigator of the Seas also is the first ship to get the new upgraded steakhouse menu in Chops Grille. New selections include a veal chop parmesan, a slow-braised short rib of beef with bordelaise sauce, and a dry-aged steak burger topped with melted gruyere and pancetta served on a brioche bun. The service charge is $35 per guest.
The Navigator of the Seas also is getting Japanese cuisine in Izumi, which has an a la carte menu, and classic Italian fare in Giovanni's Table ($15 for lunch and $20 for dinner per guest).
The new FlowRider surf simulator was installed atop the Sports Deck (Deck 13). Other additions digital signage, bow-to-stern Wi-Fi service, flat-panel televisions in every stateroom, an oversized movie screen overlooking the main pool, a new Diamond Lounge for Crown & Anchor Society loyalty member guests, and the Royal Babies and Tots Nursery for ages six to 36 months.
Navigator of the Seas sails seven-night Western Caribbean itineraries every Sunday from Galveston and visits Cozumel; Roatan, Honduras; Belize City; Falmouth, Jamaica; and Grand Cayman.
