Norwegian Charters Getaway, Cancels Inaugural Caribbean Cruise
Norwegian Cruise Line said the 4,000-passenger Norwegian Getaway has been chartered Jan. 29-Feb. 5 in New York City, meaning a trans-Atlantic crossing was shortened and the inaugural Caribbean cruise cancelled.
The 11-day Rotterdam-to-Miami voyage that was scheduled to depart on Jan. 16 is now a 10-day cruise from Southampton to New York City. In addition, the first Eastern Caribbean cruise from Miami on Feb. 1 has been cancelled. The first Eastern Caribbean sailing from Miami will now depart on Feb. 8.
The 146,000-ton ship is under construction at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany. Norwegian didn’t say who specifically chartered the ship, but Super Bowl XLVIII will be played Feb. 2 in MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Cruise ships often are used as extra housing during major sporting events that attract huge crowds.
