Onboard Costa Cruises, Sailing With Kids Has Never Been Easier
There’s never been a time when family travel has been so in the forefront – especially in the summertime when your Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feeds are inevitably full of children and their parents journeying far from home. Cruising is a popular and convenient way to travel with the whole family to a far-flung destination and, therefore, it’s important to find a cruise line that caters to the needs of all passengers, including the little ones. One line that excels in this regard is Costa Cruises.
Costa caters to every member of the family, from grandparents to children ages 6 months and older. The Costa Kids Program provides everything from a parent’s night out and dance classes to Italian language lessons and sports tournaments.
The Squok Club is for children between the ages of 3 and 17. It is organized into various groups to provide age-appropriate activities. The hours of the club are from 9 a.m. to noon, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and it is a free service that is provided to families onboard Costa’s ships. Children under the age of 3 can also use the Squok Club facilities at certain times of the day when accompanied by an adult.
The club is divided into groups including Mini for children ages 3 to 6; Maxi for children ages 7 to 12. The older kids are in the teen groups. Teen Junior is for children ages 12 to 14 and Teen is for children 15 to 17.
There is a roster of activities that the younger children can participate in from arts and crafts such as T-shirt painting and costume-making to World Wildlife Fund edutainment and a sailing knots course. The kids can also join in group dancing lessons, the Squolympics, treasure hunts, an interview with the ship’s captain and more. Sports include volleyball, basketball, table tennis, table football, hoops, bowling, shuffleboard and a variety of pool games.
In the evenings, Costa offers fun parties for the kids. There are ice cream socials; a spooky Halloween party; a pirate party; games at the Squokkotheque, which is the Squok Club’s disco; a fun fair with face painting; and fancy dress parades.
Teens also have an extensive lineup of fun programming. There are artistic activities such as temporary tattoos and body painting, necklace making, costume designing and T-shirt painting. Teens can participate in the Olympicteen competition, swimming pool games, a video quiz on modern culture, a talent show, karaoke and more. Sports for teens include volleyball, basketball, football, tennis, watersports, bowling, shuffleboard and more.
In the evenings, teens can stay entertained with a beach party, music themed evenings, a pool party, a cupid’s night, the election of a Miss or Mr. Teen and more. There is even dining that is just for them, including a group breakfast, a Nutella party, a pizza party under the stars, sunset aperitifs and themed dinners.
On each cruise, there are two themed dinners that are just for kids. These meals include a special menu designed specifically for younger guests and created by the chef. Children also have a kids menu that is served at every meal with favorites such as spaghetti, pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, grilled cheese and ice cream. There is also boys and girls beverage cards that parents can give to their children. It includes 10 non-alcoholic beverages.
Parents are also given a night – or two – off. During the two themed children’s dinners, parents have the chance to relax and enjoy a romantic evening on their own. And, in addition to dinners on their own, parents can take advantage of the kids club during the day and leave the ship to explore a port while the kids remain onboard. Parents needing some extra alone time can utilize the kids club’s evening hours as well as their late-night babysitting is available until 1:30 a.m.
While the options onboard seem endless for families, there are also a variety of family-friendly shore excursions available that cater to the needs of guests of all ages, making multigenerational travel with Costa a breeze.
