Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection’s new S.S. Maria Theresa was christened by a real princess, Anita von Hohenberg, a direct descendent of Archduchess of Austria Maria Theresa.
The river cruise ship was officially named during an elegant ceremony in Amsterdam on March 26.
Also in attendance were Uniworld President and CEO Guy Young, the Tollman family, which has owned and operated Uniworld for more than 10 years, and about 120 guests.
The S.S. Maria Theresa will cruise the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers through the heart of what was Maria Theresa’s vast empire. The inaugural voyage will depart March 28 on a nine-day “Tulips & Windmills” itinerary through Belgium and the Netherlands.
“I’d like to thank the Tollman family for your generosity in extending this honor and responsibility to me and for your ideas and entrepreneurship in creating this beautiful tribute to Maria Theresa, who left such a strong legacy across Europe,” Princess Anita said. “This new magnificent vessel, with her captain, staff and family, is in the very best hands. It is truly a floating castle.”
Beatrice Tollman, president and founder of Uniworld sister company, The Red Carnation Hotel Collection, leads Uniworld’s design team.
“Launching this ship has been one of the delights of my life,” Tollman said. “I hope everyone here today, and each and every guest to come, will be touched by the incredible beauty, attention to detail and personal service they will experience on board. Creating wonderful memories for our guests is absolutely at the heart of everything we do.”
Princess von Hohenberg is owner and managing director of Artstetten Castle in Austria, where she has welcomed Uniworld guests for many years, Young said.
The S.S. Maria Theresa’s decor is inspired by the Baroque period over which the Archduchess of Austria presided, and features antique mirrors, royal crown detailing with gold leaf, and custom furniture.
Maria Theresa was archduchess of Austria and empress of the Holy Roman Empire who reigned as the only female ruler of the Habsburg dynasty from 1740 to 1780.
