Over more than 25 years, Shark Week has grown from a simple block of themed programming to a bonafide cultural flashpoint, warranting a spot on the calendar as must-watch viewing each year. Now Princess Cruises is taking Shark Week beyond the television screen and back where it began: the open seas.
According to Princess Cruises, the company’s partnership with Discovery Communications will help bring the experiences of Shark Week—a popular week-long theme on the Discovery Channel—to its cruise ships on four different voyages via premiere television content, onboard parties, trivia games, giveaways and shark-themed food and drinks.
The activities are found on all of the ships in the Princess Cruises fleet, including cruise-staff hosted quiz-style learning sessions about sharks, team games based on aquatic life, access to exclusive Shark Week television content and a Guess the Number of Shark Teeth in the Jar game.
Starting with this year’s Shark Week at Sea, guests will be able to purchase tickets for the four separate themed itineraries. The Golden Princess will feature two trips and will depart from San Francisco on June 21 and July 1. The Ruby Princess will also feature two special trips that will depart from Seattle on June 28 and July 5.
Not only will passengers enjoy the sites along the journey to Alaska, but they will also be treated to a plethora of Shark Week-themed activities. Some of the nuances of the trip include an elevator being transformed into what appears to be a shark cage and public restrooms getting aquatic-themed mirror decals.
Children will have plenty of fun on the journeys as well, with the crew hosting giveaways and assisting with kid-friendly and shark-centric crafts, t-shirt decorating, temporary tattoos and face painting.
Add in shark-themed food and drinks, an exclusive Shark Week Premiere Party and the stage performances and casino receiving shark-heavy overhauls, and Princess Cruises is giving Shark Week fans all the entertainment they can handle.
