‘Star Trek The Cruise II’ Enlists George Takei

Screen grab from “Star Trek The Cruise II” website

The inaugural “Star Trek The Cruise” scheduled for January 9-15, 2017 aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Pearl – a favorite for theme cruises – has been long sold out, but Entertainment Cruise Productions is already planning for “Star Trek The Cruise II” in 2018, hosted by none other than helmsman Hikaru Sulu, actor George Takei.

“Star Trek” fandom is currently in full effect for the franchise’s 50th anniversary as “Star Trek Beyond” continues to play theatrically and the new “Star Trek: Discovery” television show is anticipated to begin the same month as the first theme cruise sets sail in 2017. Of course, that show will air a special preview over the air on CBS only to stream the pilot and remaining first season exclusively on CBS All Access.

But besides the new cast led by Chris Pine on the big screen and a new televised crew captained by a yet undisclosed female actress, the first cruise will set off with a slew of classic favorites: William Shatner (Captain James T. Kirk), Marina Sirtis (Counselor Deanna Troi), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William T. Riker), Robert Picardo (The Doctor), James Darren (Vic Fontaine), Denise Crosby (Security Chief Tasha Yar), John de Lancie (Q) and Terry Farrell (Jadzia Dax).

And along for “Star Trek Cruise II” will be George Takei who recently released a statement saying, “Entertainment Cruise Productions has just informed me that over 2,000 fans have pre-registered for ‘Star Trek: The Cruise II.’ I am so excited and honored that so many of you are so eager to vacation with me and my ‘Star Trek’ colleagues (soon to be announced). All I can say about all of this is ‘Oh my.’

“I’ve been saying that all my life. When my nephew’s kids spill something on the kitchen table, I say ‘Oh my.’ When I see something wonderful I say ‘Oh my,’ or when I see a radiant sunrise, or when I see a space shuttle taking off: ‘Oh my.’ It can be used many many ways. I am sure you won’t be able to count the number of my ‘Oh mys’ on the cruise.”

Other names from the “Star Trek” franchise have yet to be named for the second cruise, but based on those slated for the first one, guests can be assured that there will be many other big names coming aboard. Already planned for the 2017 sailing are four theme nights – Holo Nights, Q’s Masquerade Ball, Risa’s Festival Of The Moon Party and Starfleet’s Intergalactic Gala – as well as “Star Trek” Movies Under The Stars on Deck, board games, a scavenger hunt shore excursion (uniquely scheduled on Norwegian’s Great Stirrup Cay private island), onboard themed bars, Q&A sessions and more.

“Star Trek Cruise II” is scheduled to sail on January 5-11, 2018 aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Jade, sister ship to the Norwegian Pearl, and reservations are set to open.
