TUI Cruises put on a big celebration Friday night for the christening of its new cruise ship, Mein Schiff 5, Seatrade Cruise News reported.
Popular German singer and songwriter Lena Meyer-Landrut performed her hit song “Satellite” for about 1,800 passengers and 300 guests aboard the ship that was located just off Lübeck-Travemünde, Germany, according to the cruise media site. The event was streamed live onto LED screens set up at the beach.
Acrobats Lukas Irmler and “Les Oiseaux du paradis” (The Birds of Paradise) performed for the crowd as well, Seatrade reported. There was also a fireworks display and the traditional smashing of a Champagne bottle against the hull of the ship.
The 99,000-ton, 2,500-passenger ship cost an estimated $625 million to build, Cruise Industry News reported.
