Viking Ocean Cruises is starting its next cruise late due to a propulsion problem that left the Viking Star ship stranded in Tallinn, Estonia, for several days.

The next cruise was supposed to start Aug. 8 in Bergen, Norway, but now will begin Aug. 10 in Copenhagen. Passengers are being told to arrive in Bergen as planned, where Viking will put them up in hotels for two nights and take them on tours, at the company’s expense.

On Aug. 10, they will board a charter flight from Bergen to Copenhagen to board the ship.

According to a statement Viking posted on a Cruise Critic message board, the ship’s modified itinerary includes a day in Copenhagen on Aug 11, Kiel Canal transit on Aug. 12, a day at sea on Aug 13, and Le Havre, France, on Aug 14.

The ship then will pick up its original itinerary on Aug. 15 with two days at sea and calls at Lisbon, Portugal; Cadiz, Spain; Gibraltar, U.K.; Cartagena, Spain; and Barcelona. The cruise concludes Aug. 22.

The ship had mechanical problems during its July 25 “Viking Homelands” voyage relating to the electric transformers in the propulsion system. When repairs took longer than expected, the voyage was canceled in Tallinn. Passengers were offered the choice of staying on the ship and sailing to Bergen or returning home from Tallinn at Viking’s expense. The company said the majority of guests stayed on the ship and more than 500 traveled on charter and commercial flights from Tallinn to Bergen.

“This specific mechanical issue was highly unusual, and all guests will receive compensation for the inconvenience,” Viking said in a statement.

“Our guests’ satisfaction is important to Viking and we will be looking to make amends for these disruptions,” according to the company’s message on Cruise Critic. “We would also like to remind our guests that as with any cruise itinerary, this modified itinerary is subject to change.”
